If you ever had a dream of shopping and the shopping itself seems to be the main focus of your nighttime vision, sit up and pay attention.
This is not a passing scene.
Shopping is the main theme of your dream and just like other dream symbols, it has a very rich meaning.
But you have to be on the lookout for it because the typical dream of shopping doesn’t look like it.
A lot of people quickly forget that they were shopping in their dream, maybe they were focused on something that happened before or after.
Usually it’s after, especially if the later dream had something fantastic in it like dragons, vampires, cannibals, that kind of thing.
It’s still easy to forget your dream of shopping and that’s too bad because it can be quite rich in meaning.
The general interpretation of a dream of shopping
If you dream of shopping, it generally means that you are entering a new phase of your life. There is a lot of selection.
There’s a lot of research, and in many cases, you end up with your choice, not because you thought it out but because of impulse.
This is the key to a dream of shopping.
Your subconscious is speaking to you involving your ability to choose in a rational way but something gets in the way.
This is how a lot of people make decisions.
If you were to ask somebody why they choose to go one way instead of another, they will give you an explanation that makes all the sense in the world.
But if you were to get into their heads while they’re making that choice, a lot of the times, they do it out of impulse.
On a related note, a dream of shopping can also indicate a heightened awareness of desire.
That may seem pleasant because we need the desire to achieve things in life.
If you want a better job, you better desire new employment.
If you want to earn more money or you want to help more people, your desires have to be in the right place.
In and of itself, desire can be a good thing.
The problem is when people dream of shopping, the context of the desire is warped.
It is either too materialistic or it confuses the price of something with its value.
Whatever the case may be, it involves a constant comparison and often absorption of other people’s values.
This can be a bad thing indeed.
Because when you are desiring things not because you actually want them, you have a problem.
Either you’re trying to follow what everybody else is doing or you don’t have a mind of your own.
Finally, there’s an element in this type of dream that involves sexual fulfillment.
It can involve an awareness that after you have gone through many choices you have picked the right person.
The specific meaning of your shopping dream depends, of course, on context.
Pay close attention to the other details surrounding the main motif of shopping.
Shopping shows confidence
Going shopping in your real-life means you’re quite a confident person.
You are aware of your resources and what you’re looking for.
In a dream context, this can indicate a new phase of confidence in your life.
As long as you are able to build on past good decisions, chances are the choices you’re making now will be the right ones.
What does it mean to shop for groceries in the dream?
A shopping dream is not generalized in the sense that it doesn’t matter what you shop for.
The things that you shop for can make a crucial difference in terms of interpretation.
In this context, you’re shopping for groceries, people who have this type of dream have a love language that involves giving.
This is how you show people you care.
You may not be much of a talker or a hugger, but it doesn’t matter.
People can tell where your heart is based on the fact that you are giving.
You’re also the type of person who will continue to give, give, and give some more even if the other person doesn’t reciprocate.
Why? You give because it gives you an outlet for your natural generosity.
You love to provide for others even if you don’t have much.
You are generous to a fault.
Now, generally speaking, this can be a good thing but you also need to find some balance in your life.
Please understand that there are toxic people who are takers.
Some would even describe them as parasites.
They take, take, and take, but they never give anything in return.
Some are even toxic because of their high demands and expectations.
Make sure you stay clear of such people.
What does it mean to shop with someone in your dream?
‘
When you see yourself shopping with somebody in your dream, this indicates a strong relationship.
This dream image indicates that when both of you explore new choices together, chances are the right answers will come sooner rather than later.
This person in your dream connects with you on a deep level and is a good partner when it comes to exploring new opportunities as well as revisiting old ones.
What does it mean to shop for a few items in your dream?
If you’ve seen yourself pushing a grocery cart or going through a mall store and only picking up a few items, this indicates that your subconscious is picking up on mistakes that you have made in the past.
Whether these are real mistakes or you’re just beating yourself up totally depends on you.
Whatever the case may be, you seem so focused on bad choices that you made in the past that it seems to be interfering with your ability to make choices today.
Please understand that it’s a bad idea to define yourself based on your past mistakes.
You’re supposed to learn from the past instead of being a slave to it.
Know the difference.
What does it mean to shop for a wedding dress in your dream?
If the image of a wedding dress is the central motif of your shopping dream, this can indicate that you are ready to commit to certain areas of your life.
Please understand that this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re ready to get married.
The commitment that I’m talking about involves your career, school or course choice, and other types of major life decisions.
The problem with a lot of people is that they make an important choice, but their hearts are not in it.
It is no surprise then that they failed to live up to their fullest potential in their chosen area.
For example, if you’re in school and you would rather not be in school, how do you think this disconnect between your choice and your mindset will have on your academic performance?
This is not rocket science.
If you are in a relationship and it’s a lukewarm kind of arrangement, it is time to commit.
Again, this doesn’t mean you’re getting married. Instead, it means committing your full emotions.
The same way your job.
If you’re currently employed and you feel that you’re not getting promoted enough and you’re not getting paid what you’re worth, now’s the time to commit.
This means produce more, produce higher quality output, and have a good attitude.
In other words, be a learner, be a part of the team, and show people that you get value from producing value.
This is how you become an asset instead of a liability.
What does it mean to shop at an old Mall?
If you find yourself physically in an old mall instead of doing online shopping, this indicates that a part of you is struggling with nostalgia.
This is a very important type of shopping dream.
Nostalgia can be useful in the sense that it can frame a lot of our past lived experience.
We can categorize past choices based on this idealized picture we have of them.
But with that said, we should also understand that this is an idealized picture.
If you were to get into a time machine and move back to that stage of your life, it would be complicated.
Life would have its ups and downs.
Things are not exactly black and white.
There are a lot of grays in between. In other words, it would be exactly like your life today.
It’s complicated and that’s what makes it fun but this is also what makes it frustrating.
But if you were to turn your past into some sort of cartoon through the form of nostalgia, be very careful.
Because a lot of people compare their present day with this idealized cartoon of the past.
Let me tell you, it’s never a contest.
Why? The past will always win because it never existed.
The same way an idealized future will never exist.
Stop comparing the present to either of these.
You’re only robbing yourself of a tremendous amount of excitement, anticipation, and energy if you do that.
What does it mean to shop at a mall alone?
If you find yourself in a mall, all by your lonesome, and it seems that you’re the only person there.
This can be a very scary dream.
It’s scary not because there’s some sort of danger.
It’s scary because it is psychologically unnerving.
You have to understand that you are a social creature.
Human beings by nature are supposed to form bonds.
We’re supposed to define ourselves based on our relationship with others.
We are used to being part of a larger hole of made up of different people.
This is what makes us stick.
This is also what accounts for the success of our species.
If human beings were selfish introverts and loners, our species would probably have either remained small in population or died out a long time ago.
In fact, some researchers are convinced that the reason why the Neanderthals died out was because of their solitary nature. In other words, compared to modern Homo Sapiens, Neanderthals preferred smaller family bands.
Whatever the case may be, when you see yourself alone in a mall, your subconscious is telling you that you are feeling lonely, disconnected, and voiceless.
You may have a crowd of people around you but you feel alone.
You may find yourself in a workgroup with strangers but it feels like you’re doing the work alone. You have to find some way to establish a personal connection.
You are not meant to be cut off all by yourself.
Now, this doesn’t mean that you cannot be an introvert.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t prefer to be alone because that’s part of your personality.
I’m talking about something more profound. I’m talking about somebody who is just totally cut off.
Know the difference.
It’s one thing to recharge your spiritual, intellectual, and emotional batteries by taking some time off by yourself, and being completely afraid of people.
These are two totally different things.
What does it mean to dream of shopping for clothes?
When you see yourself going through bins or racks of clothing, this might seem like a background scene in your dream.
No way could this be the actual “meat” of your dream.
Think again.
Clothing actually has a very powerful metaphorical meaning.
Clothing entails identity.
Just as you change clothes, you’re a different person to different people in your life.
You’re a different person at the office just as you are different when you were in school.
And depending on the school you went to and how many schools you went through, you were a different person each time.
You could definitely be a different person with each of your past romantic relationships.
When you see yourself shopping for clothes, your subconscious is using the metaphor of clothing to draw your attention to who you are today.
Who you are, believe it or not, is a choice.
A lot of people think that they are a victim of history.
According to this mindset, we are all accidents of birth.
So if you’re born to certain parents who are well-off and well-djusted, you are very fortunate.
On the other hand, if you are born to parents who don’t have much cash and are neurotic or even addicted to substances or alcohol, you’re in for a rough life.
This is their deterministic thinking.
Your past determines your present.
While that is true to a certain extent, at the end of the day, who you are today is a choice.
Because you collect a lot of identities throughout the course of your life, but the one you have now is what you chose to hang on to.
There are many different coping mechanisms that can work together to affect your mindset in such a way that it truly shapes the person you become.
There’s a lot of choice in that.
And ultimately, the most important choice you can make is to make your past serve you instead of the other way around.
When you are convinced that your past determines who you are, then you have become effectively a slave of your past. It’s the other way around.
You define your past.
You pick and choose which memories to hang on to.
While it is true that there is such a thing as a repressed memory, at the end of the day, the memory that you constantly refer to and the ones that you feed into your internal script are the ones you choose
.
Choose carefully.
Are you a victim or a victor?
Are you a person who solves problems or are you the one who gets overcome by them?
Are you a person who is able to bring out the best in others or are you constantly reacting to what people around you are feeling, saying, and doing?
These are all choices.
Please understand that the moment you start choosing differently so you become a slightly different person is not going to be easy.
Why? You’re bucking against your mental habits.
If you’ve been doing certain things a certain way for a long time, it’s going to be hard to adopt something new.
But if your circumstances have changed enough and you have the proper amount of willpower, you can make it happen.
People can and do change.
So pay close attention to that shopping dream involving clothes because you have to choose carefully who you want to be.
What does it mean to buy food in your shopping dream?
If food is the main item in your shopping dream, your subconscious is drawing your attention to issues of self-care.
Are you getting enough exercise?
Are you watching what you eat?
Do you have a health plan?
Are you practicing some form of mental hygiene?
Are you staying away from emotionally toxic situations?
These are the kinds of questions that you need to ask when it comes to self-care.
The problem with this type of question is that you are the only person who can answer them.
You are the only person who is most familiar with your health both internally and externally.
A doctor can only help you so far.
But at the end of the day, if you don’t speak up, nobody can tell what your soul is going through.
This is what scares a lot of people.
Because a lot of us would rather suffer in silence.
We’ve made bad choices that continue to haunt us to this very day.
And we feel that if we were to speak up about them, we would look bad in the eyes of people we respect and trust.
It’s like having cancer but not telling the world, and here you are slowly dying inside.
Depending on the cancer you have, it is even worse because there’s a tremendous amount of pain involved.
This is especially true with bone cancer.
So here you are suffering from some sort of emotional and psychological cancer and you feel like you can’t really say anything because you don’t want people to think you’re weak.
What’s wrong with this picture?
When you see yourself buying food in your shopping dream, sit up and pay attention to your self-care issues that you may not be attending to.
What does it mean to shop from a pawn shop in your dream?
This is a very interesting dream sequence.
Usually, when people shop for jewelry, they go to a regular jewelry store.
However, if you’re smart, you would go to a pawn shop.
Pawn shops are excellent places for low-cost luxury items.
You have to understand that the typical pawn shop lowballs the person pawning property.
They know that they’re going through a tough time financially, so they have them by the neck .
Pawnshop negotiations typically go this way: You take what we offer or no deal.
When your rent hasn’t been paid in several months and you’re facing eviction, or you’ve just gone through a divorce and you’ve lost most of your money, whatever the pawnshop offers you is better than nothing.
So when you see yourself as the person shopping from a pawn shop, this can indicate three key meanings.
First, you are an opportunistic person.
You wouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of somebody’s misfortune.
This sounds harsh to a lot of people, but you have a way of justifying what you’re doing.
And to a certain extent, you are correct.
Because if you didn’t come in and help that person or take delivery of certain assets (even at rock bottom prices), chances are worse things could have happened to the seller.
But here’s the problem.
Karma is real.
You came in, wanting to take advantage of people’s misfortune. When the wheel of fortune turns and you find yourself at the bottom, would you really want to do business with somebody with your mindset?
That’s the question you need to ask yourself and you need to answer honestly.
And if you don’t like your answer, change your behavior and attitude.
The second meaning of shopping in a pawn shop indicates the willingness to look at any kind of situation from basic principles.
In other words, you don’t assume you know everything when making a choice.
Instead, you prefer to question every assumption that you may be making.
And this can lead to possibly a better decision.
The downside to this is you spent a tremendous amount of time analyzing stuff that most people already assume is one way or the other.
Do you see what I’m getting at?
But this can yield some gems from time to time.
Now, is it worth it in every situation?
That’s the question that only you can answer because you’re the one who’s going to be making that choice.
The third meaning of a pawn shop shopping dream involves self-esteem issues.
You’re thinking to yourself, “I don’t have much in life so I have to do what I can to make what little I have stretch as far as I can.”
On the surface, this seems legit.
But in reality, you’re actually pretty well-off.
Not necessarily financially, but you have a lot of things going for you.
But if your mindset is that you are always behind and you’re always broke or you are always at a material disadvantage, you’d be surprised as to how quickly this mindset leads to spiritual poverty.
People on the outside can see that you have a lot of good things going for you and you’re not going hungry but deep down inside, you feel you’re poor so no matter how much the universe blesses you and no matter how much good fortune comes your way, it is never going to be enough.
Why? You’re suffering from spiritual poverty.
What does it mean to shop for guns in a dream?
There’s a part of you that is feeling very insecure.
You’re looking for ways to protect yourself.
But in many cases, the solution that you are looking for is worse than the problem.
I’m not talking about physical guns to address fears of crime.
I’m talking about something more profound.
I’m talking about your mindset and your self-esteem.
You’re thinking that people don’t understand you and some people are out to get you so you’re either putting up walls or you have developed this caustic or even toxic personality.
Pay careful attention to the “solution” that you’ve chosen, and compare it to the problem you’re trying to solve.
Make sure that the cure is not worse than the disease.

Dream interpretation and symbology have fascinated me ever since I read Freud’s classic, “The Interpretation of Dreams.” Ever since, I have explored Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist as well as Jungian psychological ideas about the meaning of dreams. Thanks for joining me in my exploration of the amazing intersection between our conscious waking world and the rich expanse of our subconscious-the home of our intuition, instincts, and hidden potential.
