If you see a black shadow in your dream, and it seems to be the main focus of your nighttime vision, you’re not having an ordinary dream. If you are serious about figuring out your black shadow dream meaning, you have to be ready to pick apart the context of your vision.
Then again, if you’ve been reading this blog extensively, you should know by now that there is no such thing as an “ordinary dream”.
Each nighttime vision that you experience in your sleep is special in its own way.
This is definitely true if you’re trying to get to the bottom of a black shadow dream meaning.
The general meaning of a black shadow
Most shadows are dark, but they’re not all black.
Some may appear to be gray while others can be the color of the night sky.
When you experience this type of dream, your subconscious is trying to communicate to you that you are worried about certain things that you fear might happen in the future.
What makes the black shadow interesting and different from typical worries is the fact that in most situations, you would actually desire what it is you fear.
For instance, if you’ve been looking for a life partner or even a soulmate, you may have found it very difficult to find the right match.
Maybe you’ve been looking for the right person in all the wrong places.
Maybe you’ve been searching for the right person, but it wasn’t the right time.
Perhaps, you’ve even had relationships that seemed great at first, but you eventually realized that this wasn’t the person.
Whatever your personal journey may be, you were still looking for the right one.
Well, what if your subconscious is connecting the dots and is realizing that you have met the right person, or this person is already in your life, or you’re about to meet this person?
You may be thinking most people in that situation would be excited.
In reality, this is probably one of the things that you fear the most.
You have to understand that the human mind works in such a way that we often fall in love with the chase.
We get so used to the process of looking that by the time we come across whatever it is that we’re looking for, we get worried, to say the least.
In many cases, we get cold feet because, in reality, we have fallen in love with the process.
We don’t want the process to end.
We feel that we are losing something once that part of our journey ends.
This should not be a surprise because human beings, by nature, are afraid of change.
Now, you may be asking, “How can that be? Aren’t people more afraid of being lonely than being fearful of what new developments may bring?”
That’s what you think.
In fact, that’s what a lot of people think.
But when they find themselves in that situation, they go through this fear.
It’s one of those fears that are hard to articulate because it has many different layers.
You’re thinking to yourself, “What if it doesn’t last like before? What if this person is another disappointment like before? What if I screw it up? What if I’m not ready?”
The list of questions go on and on.
The more questions you ask, the more puzzled you get and the more uncertain the outcome seems.
This is what the black shadow represents.
It is the fulfillment of a long-held dream, but at the same time, it is the manifestation of all these emotional hangups and uncertainties that you are going to feel when it comes to decision time.
Please understand that this doesn’t just apply to your romantic life.
This also applies to business opportunities, academic developments, promotions, you name it.
What does it mean to see a black shadow chasing you in your dream?
Seeing a black shadow in your dream is different from having it chase you.
If you’re dreaming that you’re going about your business and all of a sudden, this black shadow appears out of nowhere and starts to chase you, this indicates that you have been having a tough time finding happiness in whatever it is that you achieve on a day to day basis.
Unless you’re a completely lazy or incompetent person, you will have achievements on a day-to-day basis.
You can take that to the bank.
Even if you have a to-do list that is mostly undone, the fact that you are able to scratch off a couple of items from that list is an achievement.
When you see a black shadow chasing you, your subconscious is trying to get the point across that you’re never happy with whatever achievements you have.
Even if you are able to scratch off everything on your to-do list, it’s still not enough.
How can this be?
You focused more on the process of getting things done instead of actually achieving things.
On the surface, this is very common because a lot of people suffer from momentum paralysis.
That’s just a fancy term for describing a state where you would rather stay in motion instead of switching gears to go to the next level because you’ve reached some sort of milestone in your life.
You kind of get used to the process.
It seems like it’s a hassle to switch gears.
But you have to understand that you have to allow yourself to change.
Your activities change you just as your goals change you.
A lot of people are under the impression that once they achieve their big dreams in life that they will finally be happy.
In reality, it’s like a black shadow that chases you because by the time you reach your destination, you have changed.
It doesn’t sit well with you.
You’re uneasy.
You’re restless.
So you move on.
It seemed that this big goal that you were looking forward to actually didn’t bring the kind of happiness that you would’ve expected.
What your subconscious is trying to teach you is that you have to understand that a process is a sort of happiness itself.
It’s not just the destination.
If we keep defining happiness as certain fixed destinations in life, then we keep postponing our personal joy.
Life becomes a hassle or an uninterrupted series of frustrations.
By the time we get to one of these milestones, it seems like such a hollow victory because you feel that your happiness can only be full when you meet the next milestone.
It never ends.
Lose yourself in the present
The black shadow will always chase you because it is a shadow.
Wherever you are, you will cast a shadow.
Wherever there is a light side of you, there is going to be the shadow side.
Wherever there is optimism, there will be pessimism.
Where there is hope, there is despair.
This is just a part of life.
You are a binary creature.
So instead of dividing your life in terms of good and bad, black and white, so on and so forth, accept the total you.
This is why living in the present is so important.
This doesn’t mean that you’re going to throw away all your dreams.
This definitely doesn’t mean that you’re going to have to lower your standards.
No!
What it does mean is that you have to be aware of where you are now and understand how today ties into what happened before.
By understanding this continuity, you can understand where you’re headed.
A little bit of self-awareness can definitely go a long way when it comes to overriding the patience, frustration, and short-sightedness that often make our life’s journey into a frustrating one.
Find your joy inside
As I mentioned above, when you define happiness as something that happens in the future, you are defining happiness in such a way that you can not attain it.
It will always be in the hands of people or situations that you can not control.
While you are making decisions now to somehow, someway, trigger that eventuality in the future, there are many intervening factors.
There are many people that have to make decisions in reaction to yours.
What if they decide the other way?
What if they have other plans?
What if they have a different agenda?
There’s just so many variables out there that you can not control.
So instead of trying to “control” these by worrying about them, which is a waste of imagination, focus on now.
Focus on the present moment.
Focus on giving the best and being the best that you can be today.
If you’re able to do this with a mind towards a fixed goal and you’re able to do this repeatedly, something great happens.
The initial commitment that you made when you started this journey bears fruit to habits that lead to the consistency of thought and, most importantly, action that make your desired outcome a reality.
This is how you turn things that bounce around in your head and make you feel good when you think about them into things that you can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell.
But for this to happen, you have to locate that power inside you.
Not in factors outside of your control and definitely not in other people.
Do you see how this works?
What does it mean to see a white shadow?
You may be laughing out loud after reading that heading.
Is there even such a thing as a white shadow?
Depending on how light is pointed in your direction and the shadow you cast, your shadow may become faint.
In other words, visually, you know that there is a shadow because this is part of what you expect.
But given the circumstances, the shadow seems very light.
In this context, your shadow is “white.”
When the main image of your shadow dream involves a white shadow, pay close attention to how it got to be that color.
Did it start out at black and then it turned white?
If this is the case, then your subconscious is trying to communicate to you that there are people around you who exert a strong influence on you.
Much like large planets affect the orbit of smaller bodies around them, these strong and influential personalities have an effect on you.
Now, you may have come up with some sort of coping mechanism where you feel that you are thwarting, minimizing, or conditioning their influence.
You might even be thinking you’re still your own person despite the fact that you have such a strong-willed individual in your life.
The test to your assumption is very simple.
Pay close attention to how you behave based on their influence.
If you find yourself reacting to them, then they have a lot more influence over your life than you give them credit for.
In fact, in many cases, they may be living rent free in your head.
It’s as if everything has to filter through what they like, what they want, what they’re about.
These people can be your parents, friends, lover, or whoever else whose opinion matters a lot to you.
You may be coping with this situation by doing the complete opposite of what they say, but this is just a testament to how strong their “gravitational pull” is on your life.
If you see a white, faint shadow in your dream, it’s because you feel that your own personality is being drowned out.
You’re no longer your own person.
Well, this is in your head because your reaction is your personality.
That’s how you choose to be because you gave these people permission to exert such influence on you.
You know what to do.
You can reject the influence, but you have to come up with something that makes better sense to you.
A lot of people don’t want to go through that.
That’s too much work.
So they’d rather react.
This is a lazy way to find your own path and, oftentimes, it leads to counterproductive results.
For example, if a son had a very influential, powerful, and accomplished father, he may try to get out from under his father’s shadow by doing drugs, sleeping around, choosing not to work a single day in his life.
There’s so many different ways to cope.
Find the path that makes sense to you but, at the same time, serves your purpose here on earth.
Now, you may be asking, “What is that purpose?”
Well, at the most basic, your purpose is to be useful.
You have to provide some value to people around you.
Start there.
What if your shadow is totally white?
If your shadow is not faint but just totally white to the point that it’s “missing”, you may be suffering from delusion.
You may be playing this script about yourself, who you are, where you’re going, what you can and can not do, what you can and can not be, so on and so forth.
Everybody does this, but the particular script that you’re playing is so contradictory and filled with so many reactions that even you can’t make sense of it.
You’re a truly confusing person.
This is not a put-down nor an insult.
It is just a fact.
A lot of people might think that if somebody calls you confused, that it’s necessarily a bad thing.
No!
It’s a statement of fact.
And the good news is with any chaos comes the opportunity for order.
A lot of beautiful things come out of chaos.
Right now, things are unsettled.
You’re kind of all over the place mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually.
What’s important is you zero in on the one power you have, which is the power to choose who you can become.
Start there.
That is your superpower.
Who do you want to be?
This is where role models come in.
What kind of values do your role models have that you would like to live out?
Once you have this in place, you have a game plan.
You can then move.
As you live your life and you get feedback from the world, you can make modifications to your plan.
And what results, as long as you’re not blindly reacting to other people’s influence, is a distinct creature called you.
What does it mean to dream of someone stepping on your black shadow?
When you see one person or a group of people stepping on your black shadow, you feel that your voice is not being heard.
You feel that you should have a lot more influence in your family as well as in your circle of friends or coworkers.
This is perfectly natural because one of the most fundamental human needs is the need to matter.
We don’t want to feel like we’re just another face in the crowd.
We don’t want to be made to feel that our presence is just taken for granted.
Deep down inside, we all have this fear.
But for the most part, it’s very faint.
But it’s still there that when we die, nobody would notice.
Sure, our friends and family members and maybe our coworkers and some neighbors might know.
But for the most part, in terms of our city, our province or state, and definitely our country or world, nobody knows.
But don’t ever equate people not knowing with people not caring.
There is such a thing as a butterfly effect.
The beating of butterfly wings somewhere in the world triggers tropical storms in another part of the world.
You have an effect.
People might not know your name.
People might not trace the effect to you.
But you do have an effect.
Every word you say and everything that you do will have a reaction as far as the world goes.
It may not be instantaneous, but it can be cumulative.
It can resonate throughout the corridors of time slowly, faintly, but in unison with other voices such as yours.
Pretty soon, the reaction comes.
With that, the counter reaction and so on and so forth.
If you dream that people are stepping on your shadow, your subconscious is communicating with your deep and profound insecurity of being taken for granted and ignored.
There are two ways to respond to this.
Either you speak up more through your work and the quality of your relationships or you focus more on your goals so that when they are fulfilled, they serve a lot more people and it triggers more chain reactions.
Whatever the case may be, use this sinking feeling of fading into anonymity to motivate you instead of depressing you.
What does it mean to dream of a shadow trying to kill you?
If you dream of a menacing black shadow trying to kill you, this is really just a recapitulation of the analysis above.
It is your mind’s struggle with the sense of anonymity and being taken for granted.
An essence that you feel that your life is meaningless or at least disregarded as such.
If you ever have this feeling, please understand that there’s a lot you can do about it.
You don’t have to suffer in the background somewhere.
Choose to live fully by laughing more, sharing more, and trying more things.
As you probably already know, the more you try, the higher the chance you get hurt.
But that’s part of life.
For a lot of people, when they look back at life, for every smile they have, they also have a matching scar.
Don’t ever let the fear of loss tarnish or diminish your love of life.
Dream interpretation and symbology have fascinated me ever since I read Freud’s classic, “The Interpretation of Dreams.” Ever since, I have explored Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist as well as Jungian psychological ideas about the meaning of dreams. Thanks for joining me in my exploration of the amazing intersection between our conscious waking world and the rich expanse of our subconscious-the home of our intuition, instincts, and hidden potential.
