Usually, when guys have wet dreams, the last thing on their minds is the spiritual meaning of their experience. Still, the question of ‘What do wet dreams mean spiritually?’ needs to be confronted at some point.
Wet dreams are very vivid and often involve some sexual activity.
You get so into it that you realize that you are ejaculating both in your dreams and real life.
That’s why it’s not usual for people to consider that wet dreams do have a spiritual meaning.
It requires quite a bit of maturity to consider the spiritual dimension of this type of dream.
Whether you’re just curious or deeply searching for a spiritual meaning for your wet dreams, you are reading the right article.
Why Do People Have Wet Dreams and What Does It Mean Spiritually?
Wet dreams are perfectly natural.
Don’t think you’re a freak if you experience an intense sexual dream.
It’s a natural occurrence for men and boys and a minority of women.
This dream happens involuntarily during sleep and is unintentional.
I’ve yet to hear of a person who intentionally gave himself a wet dream.
That would be quite an achievement.
Generally speaking, people cannot prepare for these dreams, and they come as a total surprise.
Of course, the more familiar you are with this type of dream, the less surprised you would be.
But for the most part, they are completely unintentional.
What Causes Wet Dreams?
The causes of wet dreams are unknown, but they are closely associated with the conscious or subconscious desire of sexual intercourse, erotic dream imagery, or sex dreams that a person has.
If you desire sex, it would not be unusual for your dreams to reflect this desire.
And the more you suppress the desire, the more your subconscious will project it out in the form of a dream.
This should not be a surprise because this is how your psyche relieves itself of suppressed desires and internal stresses.
If you don’t have an outlet for deep desires and foundational biological drives like sex, you’re going to be in trouble.
It’s going to come out, frequently, in the worst way possible.
Your consciousness uses sex or wet dreams to relieve the expression as a form of healthy release.
Similarly, if you’re feeling sexual tension with a person or a few people in your life, your subconscious can respond through wet dreams.
Why Are Men More Susceptible to Wet Dreams?
Wet dreams happen more often to men because visual stimuli more easily arouse them.
Unlike women, who are aroused through the things they hear, men get turned on based on what they see.
This makes a lot of sense because men are hunters, and women are gatherers in terms of biological history.
Hunters pay close attention to what they see, or they will starve.
Wet dreams are very powerful because they feature images that easily arouse a typical guy.
In the context of visual arousal, it’s not unusual for many men, particularly young men, to masturbate once they are subjected to intense visual stimuli like porn.
Guys are less able to control sexual urges and desires.
Women are more likely to redirect such sexual tensions.
Wet dreams or nocturnal emissions are more common in young men.
Adolescent males and young adult males are going through heavy hormonal changes with these raging hormones and are easily aroused.
Their subconscious plays a role in dealing with these tensions through wet dreams.
Religion and Wet Dreams
Unsurprisingly, wet dreams are often associated with evil and impurity when it comes to religion and most spiritual paths.
For many religious traditions, especially in the west, sex is taboo because it signifies loss of control.
In some religions, wanton sex is often associated with the possession of evil spirits.
Of course, sex outside marriage is considered immoral in most religions, so wet dreams, in the context of infidelity, have a negative connotation in most religions.
Given all these long-standing beliefs, ideas, customs, and traditions around sex, it is not surprising that having wet dreams is considered immoral, embarrassing, shameful, and sinful.
More often than not, wet dreams are an accident, a physical thing.
It can and will happen if you are a certain age or if you are going through certain pressures in your life.
It’s not like most people will themselves into having wet dreams.
Few people think of having an erotic dream just before going to bed.
Even if they wish to have a sex dream, they probably will not have that kind of night time vision.
A lot of things have to line up for wet dreams to happen.
These dreams occur based on factors that we don’t know.
If you are the type of person who intentionally desires to have a sex dream, your wet dreams might indicate that you have a deeper issue you must deal with, like sex addiction.
Wet Dreams Are Normal
Depending on your age, wet dreams are perfectly normal.
Nocturnal emissions are nothing to be embarrassed about.
Spontaneous orgasms during erotic dreams or caused by strong sexual attraction can and do happen.
These are normal for guys and should not be taken against you if it happens.
Even though you may be in a religion that considers wet dreams evil or improper, keep in mind that you didn’t will it.
You didn’t desire to have these dreams.
You’re in the clear as long as that’s the case.
What Is the Christian View of Wet Dreams?
The Christian view of wet dreams turns on the concept of adultery.
Jesus Christ said that if you even think of physically desiring a woman who isn’t your wife, you’ve committed adultery.
This is a “thought sin.”
Notice the absence of any physical action.
So when you have a wet dream, you have to be honest with yourself if you desire a woman or is it a generalized expression of the sexual tension you’re under.
If it’s the latter, you are free and clear because you do not desire the person.
But if you’re a Christian and have a wet dream about a specific girl that you have the hots for, then there will be issues.
Another way to interpret this is that the dream is not a product of your own desire but a form of temptation by the devil.
In most Christian traditions, God never tempts; the devil tempts.
But God does test. Know the difference.
Wet dreams can be viewed as a temptation set by the devil.
You want to know how you will react when you find yourself in that situation.
In the Christian tradition, by focusing on the Holy Spirit and constantly praying to be born again of the Holy Spirit on a moment-by-moment basis, your focus will be turned away from carnal desires.
Wet dreams will only be memories.
It boils down to commitment and your willingness to act out the things you say you believe in.
The Muslim View of Wet Dreams
Most Muslims are believers of Islam and Abrahamic faith.
They also view wet dreams as impure.
There are Islamic rituals one performs when a young man has a wet dream depending on when the dream happened.
It could have happened during Ramadan, requiring a certain ritual, or it could have happened during Sahar, which requires another ritual.
Unlike many Christians, Muslims do not view wet dreams as a sin.
They factor in the age of the person.
If it’s a young boy who hasn’t reached puberty, he is cleared of any blame.
In the Muslim tradition, the focus on dealing with wet dreams has more to do with the cleansing rituals.
As long as you go through these rituals, not only do you end up destroying the guilt and shame you feel, but it also goes a long way in preventing wet dreams in the future.
The Buddhist View of Wet Dreams
The Buddhist view of wet dreams must be examined in the context of this faith’s view of masturbation.
The core of Buddhist belief is attachment.
When we are attached to the world and its pleasures, we never break free of our slavery and suffering.
According to the Buddhist cosmological view, we are enslaved to a pointless cycle where we are born, grow up, get married, have children, get sick, and then die and repeat this process again and again.
The great Buddhist project is to break this endless cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth.
When we are attached to money as manifested by greed, or we desire flesh as manifested by sexual obsessions, we further strengthen our attachment to life.
It is no wonder that Buddhists have developed a series of practices that enable people to use their minds to deal with any attachment.
In the sexual context, if a monk goes to sleep with a clear mind, he will be free from spiritual attack and sexual thoughts, and therefore he will not dream about sexual activities or anything involving sexual desires.
Buddhists focus on clearing your mind, which leads to clearing your soul.
The key here is to end your desiring and your attachment to what is pleasurable.
Resisting Sexual Desires
According to Buddhist traditions, a man dreams about sex because they are sexually active in their minds.
The man desires all sorts of sexual pleasure to please himself.
Some even say this is meant to complete themselves.
But according to Buddhism, what the man only manages to achieve is becoming mentally unclean because he fills up his mind with such insatiable desires.
According to Buddhist traditions, if a man woke up with lifeless semen discharges because he ejaculated during his dream, he should perform a cleansing of his mind and spirit.
It’s not the end, or is it a symbol of defeat.
Instead, guys who go through this should practice deeper meditation, which can lead to a cleaner spiritual state, enabling them to resist sexual desires at night in the future.
In the Buddhist tradition, sexual attraction is only a manifestation of the many earthly desires of the human ego.
Meditation, practicing compassion, and emptying yourself by giving to others enables you to let go.
According to popular Buddhist wisdom, what happens with the body is a natural thing in life, but not everyone will experience it.
It is part of nature, and some Buddhist traditions also believe that malevolent gods cause nocturnal emissions.
Whatever the case may be, the answer depends on you.
You’re the one who can cleanse your mind and break the chain of meaninglessness that enslaves you to this world.
Women And Wet Dreams
Women dreaming of sex or having involuntary ejaculation at night is quite a rare thing.
When it comes to women, it’s important to note that while they may have the same sexual desires as men, the manifestations are quite different.
They tend to happen on a more subtle level for women.
If a woman has an intense sexual desire toward somebody, it can often involve different dream imageries.
Maybe she would dream of an ex-boyfriend or unrequited love; it would take different forms instead of an actual sex dream that triggers her physically in the real world.
Another cause for wet dreams for women involves eating the wrong kinds of food.
Certain foods inflame or swell you up like gluten.
Some foods raise your blood pressure which can affect your nighttime visions.
Men And Wet Dreams
Various schools of thought in psychology view this type of dream as an addiction, especially if it happens many times during sleeping.
Pay close attention to frequency.
Do you have one wet dream after another? If so, then you have something to think about.
If not, then you can write it off as a rare occurrence.
Frequent thoughts about masturbating, especially by single men, is a way of attaining bodily pleasure and releasing sexual pressure.
The problem with this is that it creates a harmful feedback loop.
What Porn Does to Your Brain
When you think about a sexual image or you watch porn, and then you masturbate, your brain releases dopamine, one of the most addictive substances that can flood your bloodstream.
Pretty soon, even if you’re not horny, your body craves the dopamine, so you end up watching porn even though you don’t care for it.
This is one of the most tragic aspects of porn addiction.
You end up doing something you hate, watching stuff that doesn’t turn you on, but you go through it anyway because your brain has become addicted.
It also screws up your relationships because let’s face it, most real-life men and women will never perform at the level of professional porn actors.
Forget about it; it’s not going to happen.
But subconsciously, many guys expect that their partners will give them the intense pleasure they get from watching porn.
Not only is this unfair to your partner, but you are screwing yourself up figuratively and literally if you keep hanging onto this thinking.
The problem is this is so tied into your dopamine addiction that it becomes a hard habit to break, which destroys your sexual pleasure and poisons your relationships.
Dream Example #1
I had a dream where I spent all holiday weekend at my best friend’s house, and her name was Cindy. I’ve always had a crush on Cindy, and I have never told her. I had genuine feelings for her.
If I were to get married, she’d be the one. She has this charismatic personality, she is kind, down to Earth, and friendly. Whenever I’m with her, I’m always at ease, she was everything I always wanted in a woman, and she was my best friend.
It was on a Sunday, with clear blue skies, cool breeze, and it was sunny. Cindy and I decided to go for a Christmas getaway and treat ourselves to all kinds of fun ranging from picnics to spas to shopping to wine tasting to the cinema to restaurants, and it was nothing short of wonderful.
Just spending time alone with her was my favorite pastime. For that evening, we decided to end the getaway at our favorite disco bar, DanceAway.
The bar had this blend of homely and a party setting. It made you feel like you were in your living room and having the night of your life. There were homemade couches sprawled all over the corners of the bar, on one side of the wall was the bar where you order drinks.
The center of the bar was the dance floor, which was wide enough to fit about 100 persons dancing together. The reason we chose this bar as our favorite was because it had no television, unlike other bars, the use of phones in the bar was not allowed.
This bar makes it possible for people to have a one-on-one conversation with each one, to connect properly, with no external distractions. We had crazy fun that night as we felt like kids who had just been gifted a bicycle as a birthday gift. We were so excited the atmosphere filled with cheers and laughter it was as if the universe was partying with us.
At 9:30 p.m. we decided it was time to go home.
We got to her well-furnished two-bedroom apartments at 10:25 p.m. we were still talking about how fun the night was, the people we met there and talked to, how the atmosphere was just right. We talked about everything, and the conversation just flowed.
It was time to take a shower and rest for the night. So we decided to take a shower return to the dining for a light supper before bed. Afterward, we were seated side-by-side at her glass dining table having leftover pasta from our getaway earlier.
We finished eating, She washed the dishes while I cleaned the table. We said our goodnights and headed for our bedrooms. I slept in her guest room.
The clock on the bedside cabinet beside my bed chimed midnight, I was wide awake. I couldn’t get over the feeling that the woman I had come to know and care for was lying in the room beside my own.
I tossed and turned on my bed tried to find sleep, and the more I tried, the less sleep came. I said to myself, “The reason you’re feeling this way is that you are yet to tell Cindy how you feel about her, and this night might be your only chance.”
Finally, I made up my mind and got out of bed to tell her how I felt. As I opened my door, the most beautiful girl in the world was staring at me with eyes that seemed to look into the deepest part of my mind and read my thoughts, “God! she was beautiful.”
She wore a loose-fitting pajama top and shorts exposing perfect brown spotless long legs. I could feel my body tense at her sight, and my palms were already sweating, my heart beating twice as fast.
Then she said, “There is something I have been meaning to tell you, Gerry.” Then I said to myself, “It’s now or never, Gerald.”
I led her into my room, and she sat on my bed and asked me to sit beside her.
She started telling me how I’ve become a stable figure in her life, that I have come to be a friend she can depend on, how She liked who She was whenever I was around me, that if she were to get married, it would be with a man like me. Then she said, “I love you, Gerald. Let me be your woman.”
Those words became the best words I’ve ever heard in my life, and then she kissed me so passionately it felt like I was floating on air. The kiss became so intense, it was as if we had both been waiting for this moment our entire lives.
In an instant, we were both naked, savoring the moment we were spending in each other’s arms, and we spent the night making wild, passionate Love.
I woke up in the morning only to realize she was not close to me on the bed. I opened my eyes and looked around to discover that I was in my bedroom in my apartment. I got out of bed and felt a wet patch on my night shorts, “Damn! I had a wet dream.”
I only smiled and said to myself, “It’s going to come true someday.”
I washed up and looked forward to meeting my best friend, Cindy.
